Innovative Music Series to Continue

Since its inception in 1997, the OPEN EARS concert/lecture series has brought a wide variety of contemporary musicians to Suffolk County Community College. These artists, who have been composers, performers, and conductors, are given the opportunity to demonstrate and discuss their craft with the college community. Interaction is a crucial element of these events, as audience members are encouraged to speak freely to facilitate everyoneÕs understanding. The dialogue that results is often as interesting as the music itself.

Past guests have included saxophonist Taimur Sullivan, clarinetist Alan Woy, the Stony Brook Contemporary Chamber Players, and composers Perry Goldstein and Paul Steinberg.

The first event of this season will be featuring members of Long Island Composers Alliance. Compositions by Perry Goldstein, William Ryan, Edward Smaldone, and Dan Weymouth will be performed and discussed. This organization, founded in 1972, is the only organization devoted exclusively to the performance, promotion and preservation of serious music written by composers living and working on Long Island, from Brooklyn to Orient. LICA has presented over 1,000 works by over 100 composers in over 200 concerts throughout Long Island, as well as Manhattan, the Bronx, Westchester, Boston, Chicago, Florida, and in Europe.

This presentation will take place November 3, 1999, 11-12:15, room H-20 Southampton building, Ammerman campus. It is free and open to the public.
