Innovative Performers to Appear on Open Ears
This fall semester two prestigious guest musicians will share their talents with the college community, as the award-winning Open Ears concert series, now entering its seventh season, continues.
On October 16, 2002 Open Ears 18 will feature pianist Lisa Moore. She has dedicated her life to creating a new way to experience the piano. Combining powerful technique with vivid theatricality, her solo concerts are more than ordinary piano recitals. Texts, songs, whistles and screams mix with virtuosic cascades of pianistic brilliance, creating forceful thematic programmes, focusing on a single composer or idea. Equally at home in the masterworks of the past and present music, many of the works she performs have been written especially for her. Through her vast experience working with living composers she has developed a unique and unforgettable piano repertoire.

Ms. Moore is the pianist for two prominent New York based chamber groups: the Da Capo Chamber Players and the Bang On A Can All-Stars. Equally at home in a diverse range of musical styles, Moore has performed with a remarkably wide range of ensembles including: the New York City Ballet, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, BargeMusic, St. Lukes Orchestra, American Composers Orchestra, Steve Reich Ensemble, Paul Dresher Ensemble, Sequitur, Newband, Music at the Anthology, and the The Crosstown Ensemble.
On November 13, 2002 Open Ears 19 will present the talented percussionist Michael Lipsey. He holds a BM from Queens College and a MM from Manhattan School of Music. He has performed with such prestigious ensembles as the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society II, Riverside Symphony, Ensemble Sospeso, Philharmonia Virtuosi, Newband and is a founding member of the Talujon Percussion Quartet. He has recorded for labels such as Sony Classical with the BBC Symphony, CRI Records, Albany Records, Mode Records and Nonesuch Records. He has performed at festivals around the world including Berlin, Mexico City, Taipei, Tokyo, Moscow, Bang on a Can, Chautauqua, Library of Congress and the Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors Festival.
Mr. Lipsey directs the Percussion and Contemporary Ensembles at Queens and Wagner Colleges and is an Adjunct Lecturer at Connecticut College. He is very interested in creating new works for hand drums. He is currently working on a project to commission and premiere works in this medium.
In addition to the exciting performances, there will be opportunities for the audience members to have a dialogue with the artists. These sessions are quite informative, and very often are as entertaining as the music.
Both events will take place from 11:00am-12:15pm in the Southampton building, room H-20, Ammerman campus, Selden, NY. They are free and open to the public.

Open Ears Wins National Award
Again
The Open Ears concert series continues to attract national attention
as it was recently named the first place winner in the prestigious
ASCAP/Chamber Music America Adventurous Programming Competition.
This is the second consecutive year the series has received an award.
The award is given to chamber ensembles and presenters throughout
the country that demonstrate a unique commitment to programming
contemporary music.
It is
incredibly gratifying to be recognized for the work that goes into
this series, says the series founder and producer William
Ryan, Assistant Professor of Music at Suffolk Community College.
Certainly
our department and the general college community recognize the importance
of our events, but to be recognized on a national level like this
is quite astounding.
Since 1997 the
series has brought the most significant performers and composers
of our time to interact with SCC students, faculty, and community
members. Every event both challenges and entertains, leaving the
audience with sounds and images that they never forget.
