50K Run Winner

50K Anniversary Race
- June 14, 2009
- Suffolk County Community College, along with the Broadway Ultra Society and NY Ultra Running, held a Grand Prix running event. This 50K run was the first official event marking the College's 50th Anniversary Year.  First place finisher in the men’s division was Byron Lane, an alumnus of Suffolk County Community College, class of 1988.

August

Golf OutingAugust 3, 2009 - The Suffolk Community College Foundation, Inc. held its 26th Annual Charles F. Kelly, Jr. Memorial Golf Classic at the Great Rock Golf Club and Blackwells Restaurant in Wading River.  The proceeds from the outing will support student scholarships, emergency student loans and other programs for the students of Suffolk County Community College.

Green Technology Building"Green" Workforce Development and Technology Center - September 2, 2009 - SCCC held a 50th Anniversary Celebration and marked it with the grand opening of a new “Green” Workforce Development and Technology Center on the Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood. The 18,000-square-foot building has been designed to meet “Gold” LEED certification. The grand opening celebration included Dr. Nancy L. Zimpher, Chancellor of the State University of New York (SUNY) system, and a broad spectrum of elected officials and regional business leaders. Chancellor Zimpher’s visit to SCCC was part of her tour of all 64 SUNY campuses, which is the first step in the creation a strategic plan for the SUNY system.

All College Day - September 15, 2009 - College employees viewed SCCC’s  50th Anniversary Documentary in the Field House of the College’s Health, Sports and Education Center located on the Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood.

Multicultural Tile Wall Unveiling - September 30, 2009

The multicultural tile wall displays the compilation of 500 student sculptural relief tiles created over the past 10 years collected by Michaelann Tostanoski, Professor of Visual Arts. The College unveiled this newly installed wall outside Gallery West in the Captree Commons Building on the Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood with a public event on September 30th.  The wall celebrates the individuality that distinguishes us, the drive that unites us, and the spirit that guides us to forge a more beautiful community.

Ammerman Athletic Department Homecoming Event – October 11, 2009
-
The Ammerman Campus Athletics Department hosted an alumni homecoming event for former and current baseball players this past Sunday (Oct. 11) at the Brookhaven Gym. The event included a D.J., a homerun contest, an alumni baseball game and a picnic lunch.  Alumni took the opportunity to reminisce; current players enjoyed the opportunity to interact with those who had walked the student athlete path before them.  Kudos to Eric Brown, SCCC Clipper’s Baseball Coach; Kevin Foley, Interim Director of Athletics; Gina Caputo, Clipper’s Cheerleading Coach; Joe Kosina, Assistant Baseball Coach, and the staff of the Athletics Department.   • Alumni Fashion Show - October 29, 2009 - SCCC alumni, faculty and staff as strutted their stuff on the catwalk and feature fashions from the past five decades! The event was held at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook. Click here for the Fashion Show slideshow
  • Music of the Craig Boyd Band - October 30, 2009 - A concert featuring the music of Craig Boyd, SCCC alumnus and College Coordinator of Music included smooth jazz renditions including material from his upcoming album, Being With You. Click here for the Craig Boyd Band slideshow
  • Halloween Festival - October 31, 2009 - Open to the general public the Halloween Festival took place at Veteran’s Plaza on the Ammerman Campus. Alumni and current students alike brought their children to this free event which included Halloween games, contests and trick-or-treating.

50 Years of Astronomy50 Years of Astronomy – November 13, 2009 – 7:30 p.m. - Dr. Michael Inglis, Professor of Astronomy, held a public lecture on the Ammerman Campus to discuss how the past 50 years have been unprecedented in our understanding of the Universe.

Once Upon A Mattress - November 20th, 21st, 27th, 28th, and December 4th, and 5th, 2009 at 8:00 p.m. and November 22nd, 29th, and December 6th at 2:00 p.m. –To commemorate the College’s 50th Anniversary, the theatres at Suffolk County Community College presented Once Upon a Mattress, a Tony Nominee for best musical in 1959 - the year SCCC first opened its doors. 

Multicultural Thanksgiving Feast - November 18th – 11:00 a.m.During one of the College’s most celebrated traditions, administrators who have served or currently serve the College on the Eastern Campus, gathered to give thanks and to celebrate the College’s 50th anniversary.  As a bonus they took home a commemorative apron!

50th Anniversary Documentary – The College’s 50th anniversary documentary was shown on all three campuses for faculty, staff and students.

College Holiday Party - December 4, 2009 – Members of SCCC’s staff, faculty and administrators ring in the Holiday season at a 50th Anniversary themed Holiday party.

Salute to Excellence


Salute to Excellence Gala
- March 6, 2010
- - The Suffolk Community College Foundation will hold a Salute to Excellence Gala at the Hyatt Regency Long Island in Hauppauge featuring 50th Anniversary themes. 6:30 cocktail hour with dinner to follow.

Distinguished Faculty LuncheonApril 23, 2010 - The College will hold a celebration to honor faculty from SCCC who are the recipients of this year’s SUNY Chancellor Awards.  

May               

Philosophy Department Spring Conference - May 8, 2010  -  The philosophy department will hold a spring conference exploring the works of William James and American Pragmatism.  The topic is especially fitting as we celebrate SCCC’s 50th anniversary, since the pragmatists – William James, Charles Pierce, and especially John Dewey - heralded the democratization of education which influenced the community college movement.
