Women's Club is an informal discussion group made up of students and
faculty members. The club operates in close cooperation with the students and
faculty members of the SCCC Women’s Studies Program. The modality of the
meetings varies between discussions, invited guest speakers, or watching a movie.
The topics – normally chosen by the officers/advisors or by people who
attend the meetings – focus on a broad range of issues which are of particular
relevance to women. However, men are welcome to the meetings. In some instances,
Women’s Club will co-organize a meeting together with another club, or get involved in forms of political activism (e.g.
the March for Women's Lives, Washington, D.C., April 25, 2004). People who attend our
meetings should feel free to express their opinion, they should expect to get
engaged into interesting discussions, and to discover new perspectives on gender-related topics and issue.
Here a few examples for topics of previous club meetings: women's situation in the Muslim world, surviving as a handicapped person, how to protect oneself from a physical attack, anthropology’s view of women, women's relationship to food, problem's of returning women students, women and globalization, problems of women in the workplace, women immigrant workers on Long Island, relationship problems between women and men, sex slavery and trafficking in women, midwifery, sport and violence against women.
