Prof. Thomas Bovino is a native of the midwest who came to Suffolk Community College in August 2000. He attended The Ohio State University and completed his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Applied Communication Theory and Methodology at Cleveland State University. From there, he entered the doctoral program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and has completed all the course work and preliminary exams for the Ph.D.

During his graduate work, Prof. Bovino conducted various research projects with children, aimed at the discovery of communication competencies in a variety of arenas. His Master’s thesis is an exploration of conflict behaviors among second graders with regard to income level of the family, and his doctoral dissertation explores helping and social support among fifth graders at school and in the home. In addition, Prof. Bovino has published an article that looks at the development of communication competency in several writing genres across kindergarten to second grade. He has also presented several scholarly papers at regional and national conventions focusing on social support processes in health issues and on instructional practices.

Beyond the classroom, Prof. Bovino is the director/coach of the Ammerman campus forensics team, serves as a public address announcer for the athletic department, and is the area representative to the executive council of the Faculty Association. He has also directed a readers’ theatre production of “Spoon River Anthology” and assistant directed the Broadway musical “Guys and Dolls” in conjunction with the theatre department.

Prof. Bovino taught at the University of Illinois and at Millikin University before coming to Suffolk. At Suffolk, he teaches Introduction to Human Communication (CO 11), Interpersonal Communication (CO 12), Public Speaking (CO 15), Oral Interpretation (CO 51), Introduction to Theatre (TH 11), and developed a special topics course in Health Communication (CO 40). He is also an active member of both the National Communication Association and the Eastern Communication Association.
