Legal  Studies  Club
by Maria D'Amato

Any student with a desire to pursue a law career should be aware of the opportunities which "The Legal Studies Club" can offer.

Last semester "The Legal Studies Club" won an award for Outstanding Pre-Professional Club, and prior tot hat they were awarded Most Outstanding New Club.

Janice Kramer, President of the Club and Professor Cartier, Advisory, are both responsible for the great success of this club.

Cartier spoke with pride about the club.  “I feel it’s one of the best clubs on campus, and I’ve never seen more hard-working students than the ones in Legal Studies.  I feel very strongly about this club; it has a lot to give for it’s members.”

Kramer explained the purpose of the club. “It’s main function is to inform students of legal-oriented jobs, including internships which are given through the advisors of the club.”  (An internship is a non-paying job much like on-the-job training).

Some past activities of the club were described by Kramer, “Some of the functions are social activities, most are trips to various courts.  Last semester we went to the Court of Appeals.  This semester the club will going to The District Court in Riverhead.”  Later she added that a four day trip to Washington in November will be arranged.

The Legal Studies club was first organized two years ago by an active group of both Paralegal and Criminal Justice students.  Kramer said that this year meetings will be held every other Thursday, beginning October 1, at 3:30 in room 321 of the Riverhead Building.  There will be guest speakers such as Lawyers and Paralegals.

The club is looking to recruit new members. Any student either interested in or majoring in law should not hesitate to take advantage of the great opportunities it offers.
