Overview of Programs

Suffolk County Community College now offers associate degree programs that prepare students for careers in education for grades 7-12 in the areas of English, biology, social studies, and mathematics. In these programs, students complete A.A. degrees at SCCC and then transfer seamlessly to those universities or colleges with which Suffolk has articulation, unified transfer or joint registration agreements (see college catalog). Upon successful completion of their full program of study, students will receive a baccalaureate degree in their major field and will have fulfilled requirements for New York State Initial Certification in education, grades 7-12, in their area.

The Adolescence Education programs at SCCC offer a strong liberal arts foundation, while including a course specifically related to pedagogy. As a component of the educational foundation course, 20 hours of guided observations at middle level and secondary schools is required. These observations partially fulfill field experience requirements of the New York State Education Department. Other New York State teacher certification standards are met through upper-level course work at the collaborating colleges, including supervised student teaching.

Education Course

ED12: Introduction to Education
Focuses on the foundations of the educational system in the U.S. Students study the school in relation to historical and philosophical premises of education; analyze relationship among social and cultural influences on school and curriculum; examine role of teacher within cultural context; and study physical organization of schools and classrooms in relation to educational goals and curriculum. Guided observation in middle and secondary schools (20 hrs.). Prerequisites: matriculation in the Adolescence Education curriculums (Curriculum Codes 113, 114, 115, 116, 117 and 118) with successful completion of 30 or more credits or permission of appropriate administrator.
