CHINESE, ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE, FRENCH, GERMAN,
ITALIAN,
LATIN and SPANISH!
In
the last
several years the Foreign Language / ESL Department has steadily moved
in new directions to meet the changing needs of Suffolk County Community
College students. Our
courses
range from the elementary and intermediate sequences in all languages
to advanced courses in Italian and Spanish. In addition the department
has introduced "Spanish for Spanish Speakers", a course designed
to strengthen the language ability of students of Hispanic background
who already speak Spanish but lack the more formal knowledge of the language.
Upon
successful completion of all language courses at SCCC students will acquire:
- A basic proficiency in the understanding and use of a foreign language.
- Knowledge of the distinctive features of culture(s) associated with
the language they are studying.
More specifically, you will be able to comprehend the target language
in a speaking situation; to speak using appropriate language patterns;
to comprehend various types of written material; to express yourself in
writing using the target language; to show a general understanding and
appreciation for the target language culture.
Our Language Laboratory,
located in the Islip Arts Building, Room 114, is
a fully equipped facility where students can reinforce their language
study by listening to audio programs and working with interactive software
in the target language.
