PROCEDURES FOR REPORTING FIRES AND FIRE ALARMS

If there is any indication of fire, no matter how insignificant, the following procedure should be followed:

  1. Pull the fire alarm.

  2. All campus fire alarms are connected directly to Suffolk County Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services. The local fire department will be notified of all activations of college fire alarms by this department. Follow all items listed below.

  3. Contact College Public Safety (if you can safely):

Ammerman Campus Dial 4242 or 4240
    Eastern Campus Dial 3636
    Western Campus Dial 6777

  4. Be sure everyone leaves the building and moves away so responding emergency personnel can get to the building.

  5. Remain in vicinity or as close to the building as is safe under the circumstances until the Fire Department, Public Safety or an administrative duty officer arrives to investigate.

  6. If it is determined that the alarm has been sounded by vandals or in error, Public Safety will notify the Suffolk County Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services of this condition.

All fire alarms sounding or reports of fire are to be considered legitimate until proven different by contrary evidence. Although the college maintains a Public Safety staff, faculty cooperation is needed in the following matters:

BOMB SCARES Procedures concerning bomb scares vary depending upon circumstances. Follow instructions given by administrators and Security personnel.
FIRE DRILLS Specific procedures found in Appendix C—links have been developed for each campus.
LOST PROPERTY A Lost and Found service is maintained on each campus. It is located in Public Safety at the Grant Campus, Student Activities on the Eastern Campus and the College Road Public Safety Booth at the Ammerman Campus.
SMOKING The college has been declared a smoke-free environment, and this policy shall be strictly enforced in all college buildings and vehicles. Smoking is prohibited in individual offices, classrooms, corridors, lobbies, bookstore, cafeteria, lounges, lavatories, and any other indoor space. Smoking is also prohibited within 50 feet of the entrance to all college buildings. Faculty are expected to follow and enforce this policy.
PARKING All vehicles parking on any Suffolk County Community College campus must display the appropriate sticker (staff, faculty and Administrator) which can be obtained from the Public Safety office on the Grant Campus; the Associate Dean of Students on the Ammerman and Eastern campuses. Faculty and staff parking spaces are designated by red lines. Vehicles not displaying the proper sticker may be ticketed beginning with the second week of classes.
