Pharmacy Technician Program
Spring 2009

The Office of Continuing Education (OCE) is offering a non-credit Pharmacy Technician program.  This program will provide enrollees with the knowledge and skills necessary to obtain employment in pharmacies under the supervision of registered pharmacists or licensed pharmacy technicians. Pharmacy technicians and pharmacy aides have very favorable employment prospects through 2014 (Workforce New York Web site). In addition, Walgreen’s and CVS have expressed an interest in such a training program.

Participants must have a high school diploma or a GED.  The discounted tuition for each part is $1,495.  Certain income eligible people may be able to participate free of charge. The two part series are:

XAH510 Part I - Pharmacy Technician Program (119 hours)

    1. Overview of Pharmacy (6 hours)
    2. Community Pharmacy Practice (15 hours)
    3. Introduction to Pharmacy Law and Ethics (12 hours)
    4. Introduction to Medical Terminology (24 hours)
    5. Communication Skills (8 hours)
    6. Pharmaceutical Calculations (15 hours)
    7. Excel for the Health Care Professional (15 hours)
    8. Introduction to Pharmacology (24 hours)

XAH511 Part II - Pharmacy Technician Program (82 hours)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Pharmacy Technician Assistant Program Part 1

    1. Advanced Pharmaceutical Calculations (6 hours)
    2. Insurance Procedures (6 hours)
    3. Inventory Procedures (6 hours)
    4. Field work Hospital/clinic (20 hours)
    5. Field work Retail Pharmacy (20 hours)
    6. National Certification Exam Preparation (24 hours)

Please note:  The Pharmacy Technician Program is also offered to certain income-eligible applicants free of charge at the Grant Campus in Brentwood. The Grant Campus offers the program Monday-Friday, 9:00 am-5:00pm.
